The story follows Cole “Smitty” Smith, a decorated British World War I artillery gunner who survives the horrors of the Great War and emigrates to the American Southwest, inspired by Zane Grey novels and a longing for peace and open horizons. He becomes a respected rancher in New Mexico, building a life defined by hard work, restraint, and quiet faith.
That hard-won peace is threatened by Dooley Sikes, a ruthless neighboring rancher driven by bitterness, greed, and a legacy of violence inherited from his father. Their conflict escalates into a dramatic standoff in the Chiricahua Mountains, where force, survival, and moral choice collide.
